Anerastia lotella

(Hübner, 1913)1432 / 62.069

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Quite a local and uncommon species with us. Restricted in the east to the coast-sands at Felixstow cliffs (Mly), Hemley in 1904 (Wir), Aldeburgh in 1892 (Ctw), Kessingland, Lowestoft, &c, to Yarmouth denes in 1933. Sotterly at light in June 1936 (Gd). And in the north-west to the Breck at Tuddenham, Brandon sandhills, &c. Sizewell shore in 1937 (Mly).

Recent Status: The species is well established on the east coast. There are no recent (2023) records for Breckland but it should still be present on the Suffolk side of the Brecks.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying at night during summer and coming to light. The larvae feed on grasses growing in dry sandy or stony locations. They hide in silken tubes at the base of the grasses where they also pupate in a cocoon.

Identification: A distinctive species with long forward pointing palps. The wing colour is a light sandy brown, sometimes pinkish. There are white scales on the veins that are then outlined in black scales. The markings are variable however and the white or the black scales may become more dominant obscuring any discrete pattern. There are two very faint discal spots. There is sometimes a strong white streak along the costa that could cause confusion with Pima boisduvaliella however that species has a prominent black spot at the end of the discal cell.

Recorded in 15 (26%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1892.
Last Recorded in 2023.
