Cadra cautella

(Walker, 1863)1476 / 62.067
=Ephestia cautella

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

A E Aston 1961 desuetella, Walk., cahiritella, Zell., pascuella, Barr.) Dried-fruit Knot-horn. 2 specimens were taken at Freckenham in early June, 1931, by Messrs. B. S. Harwood and Gilles (Trans. S.N.S., Vol., IV, pt. III, p. 251).

Recent Status: Recorded in East Suffolk.

Life Style: In common with the two other species of Cadra recorded in Britain Cadra cautella is synanthropic, not capable of sustaining a breeding population outdoors in Britain. It has been recorded from January to November. The larvae feed on stored food products, preferring dried fruits. They feed from a silken gallery in the foodstuff and pupate in a cocoon in that location.

Identification: Cadra species resemble Ephestia where they have been placed taxonomically in the past. Cadra cautella is the least well marked of the three species recorded in Britain. If the pre median line can be distinguished and is straight and not dentate then that character will separate it from the other two species. However because of the possibility of further species to be imported then genitalia dissection is required to confirm the identity More Info
