Ephestia elutella

(Hübner, 1796)1473 / 62.064

Morley’s Final Catalogue: At light in towns, to which it is attracted from grocers' warehouses everywhere (Trans, ii, 296):—Ipswich in great numbers (Pyett), and at electric light during 1895-8 (Mly); Felixstow in July 1902 (Gibbs); Hemley (Wir); Monks Soham (Mly); Lowestoft (I.e. ii, 186; Crf), Beccles (Ctw).

Recent Status: There are very few records of this species in the county. Much less frequent that in Morley’s time.

Life Style: Ephestia elutella is primarily synanthropic. It is not reliably recorded as an immigrant but has been captured outdoors. The larvae feed on stored products of a very wide nature and can be captured outdoors where the infested products are spread for bird/animal feed.

Identification: Ephestia species can be difficult to identify. Particularly since Ephestia woodiella is common in the county. The other species could easily be mistaken as faded or aberrant E. woodiella. E. woodiella forewing has a broad area of light orange, brown, reddish brown or pink shade along the whole length of the dorsum. However this can be reduced or faded. Ephestia elutella is very similar to E. woodiella but is usually slightly more brightly and boldly marked and coloured. A record of this species must refer to the genitalia More Info
