Euzophera pinguis

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Stowmarket about 1860 (B) ; at light in Ipswich in 1901 (Pyett) and Bungay in July 1900 (Mn). Rarely in Monks Soham at light in August and September (Mly).

Recent Status: A common species across Suffolk.

Life Style: The moth is single brooded flying during summer and coming to light. The larvae mine galleries in the living bark of Fraxinus excelsior. They may take two years to mature. Black frass can indicate their presence. They pupate in the larval feeding location.

Identification: A cream to fawn forewing is heavily marked with black scales, particularly either side of the pre median line and to a lesser extent of the post median line and terminal area. The discal spots and palps are inconspicuous.
