Nyctegretis lineana

(Scopoli, 1763)1468 / 62.051
=Nyctegretis achatinella

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Occurs sparingly along most, if not the whole, of our coast from Felixstow in 1901, 1902 and 1903 (Gibbs), through the Southwold southern s a n d h i l l s ( i n July 1901, Mly), to both Benacre and Kessingland (before 1890, Crf). Dunwich beach, 1937 (Mly).

Recent Status: A species restricted to the east facing coasts of southern England, Nyctegretis lineana is well established along the Suffolk coast.

Life Style: The moth flies at night during summer and comes to light. The larvae feed on Common Restharrow, Ononis repens, and possibly other low growing plants in sandy areas beyond the tidal range. They hide in a silken tube beneath the host plants where they also hibernate and pupate close by in an attached cocoon.

Identification: The moth is characterised by the strongly oblique pre median line on the forewing which results in the median band being 2 to 3 times the width on the costa compared to the dorsum. Both lines are white and relatively straight. The forewing ground colour ranges through cream, reddish brown and grey. It is darker shaded on the basal side of the lines and the double white discal spots. The palps are curved, erect and evident.
