Delplanqueia inscriptella

(Duponchel, 1836)1462a / 62.0151

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Probably not uncommon among thyme, though unknown here in 1890. Taken at Bungay light in 1906 (Mn). Framlingham butts in July 1922 (Mly); Gorleston in 1932, and not rare at light beside Fritton Lake in early August 1934 (D.).

Morley’s comments refer to both D. dilutella and D. inscriptella.

Recent Status: Delplanqueia inscriptella was proven as an existing British species by David Agassiz, Entomologist’s Rec. J. Var. 127 (2015). Information on its current status and that of D. dilutella is still developing. There are post 2015 Suffolk records for D. inscriptella.

Life Style: The separation of the species of Delplanqueia in the UK was on retained adult moths therefore any difference in life style is open to discussion. Delplanqueia are single brooded, flying in mid-summer by day and night and coming to light. The larvae feed from a webbing on Thymus species. They may have an association with Lasius flavus.

Identification: Delplanqueia inscriptella lacks the strongly marked white sub-basal fascia of D. dilutella. Barry Goater in 1986 notes ‘strongly sinuate whitish sub-basal line sometimes present’. Otherwise the appearance of the adult moth is similar but less strongly marked than D. dilutella. Dissection is currently required for a record of D. inscriptella. The genitalia difference between it and D. dilutella rests in the signa and cornuti. More Info .
