Pima boisduvaliella

(Guenée, 1845)1453 / 62.019

Morley’s Final Catalogue: A coast-sandhills species, extending north only to Norfolk. Of extreme rarity with us, apparently; not re-discovered here since two or three examples, including Curtis' type, were captured by Mr. H. F. Farr at the Lowestoft north lighthouse during early June 1840 (Ann. Nat. Hist. ii, vol. v, p. 110), till 1934 when the Bishop bred a specimen from pea-pods collected recently on the Shingle-street beach at Hollesley: cf. EMM. 1882,217.

Recent Status: More frequent than during Morley’s time, Pima boisduvaliella is well established along the Suffolk coast, especially in the south. The moth will wander during warmer weather.

Life Style: A double brooded species that flies at night and comes to light. The larvae feed inside the pods of Lathyrus japonicus, Lotus corniculatus and Ononis spinosa. The first brood larvae pupate and emerge during summer. The late summer larvae hibernate and pupate during spring. Pupation is in a cocoon.

Identification: A distinctive species with buff forewings that are darker towards a sharply defined white streak just short of the dark costa. The costal edge is straight for much of its length. The long palps are curved and semi-erect. Of the two possible confusion species, the palps of Anerastia lotella are long and forward pointing. Those of Pleurota bicostella are long rough scaled and forward pointing with an upright narrow terminal segment. There is a prominent dark spot at two thirds on P. boisduvaliella, absent in Anerastia lotella.
