Sciota rhenella

(Zincken, 1818)1447b / 62.018

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: Sciota rhenella has arrived on the Suffolk coast as immigrants. First recorded during 2015. The frequency of records in the early 2020s suggests possible residency, particularly in the south.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying during summer and coming to light. The green larvae feed on Populus species and will fold a leaf or spin two leaves together. The pupae overwinter in a cocoon.

Identification: Sciota rhenella is the largest and palest of the Suffolk Sciota species but a melanic form also occurs. The forewing has a straight white sub-basal line between the black band and the basal orange. This is lacking in S. adelphella. The orange basal patch does not extend onto the thorax and head to any great degree. The median band is shaded with whitish scales and the discal spots are prominent.
