Sciota adelphella

(Fischer von Röslerstamm, 1836)1447a / 62.017

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: Sciota adelphela is believed to have arrived as an immigrant to Suffolk. It has established strong populations at locations near the east coast and has also been recorded in West Suffolk.

Life Style: The moth is single brooded, flying in mid-summer and coming to light. The larvae feed on Salix alba, spinning leaves together to feed from. It has also been found on S. fragilis and S. viminalis in Europe. The pupa passes the winter in a cocoon.

Identification: The species is more brightly coloured than S. hostilis and S. rhenella. On the forewing the pre median line consists of two strongly marked white arcs reaching from the dorsum two thirds of the way to the costa. These lines when visible are straighter and less strongly marked in the other species. The forewing is black both sides of this line. The basal edge of the black is irregular and without any clear white line. The basal area of the wing, thorax and head are mostly a bright orange, salmon pink or bright red brown. This colour on the thorax and head is present in the melanic form. The discal spots are not strongly marked and the weakly marked whitish post median line is dentate.
