Loxostege sticticalis

(Linnaeus, 1761)1368 / 63.002

Morley’s Final Catalogue: A very local kind. One taken on the Suffolk coast in 1858 (Bree, Ent. Wk. Intell. v, 1858, p. 30) ; Finborough (teste Bloomfield, presumably by either Bree or Crewe). All our other records are from the Breck: Brandon and Thetford (cf. Wrt, Suff. Inst, iv, 1870, 218); in swarms at light, and a few by day, at Brandon during 1888-9 (Vivian) ; several at Tuddenham in August 1884 {Meek, Ent. xvii, 278), by Sparke in 1900 and constantly found there since that year. Icklingham, Worlington, &c., August 1934 (Mly, D); Mildenhall 1936 (Gd).

Recent Status: Loxostege sticticalis is currently considered as an immigrant and temporary colonist, having been resident in Breckland. The frequency of records in the south east of Suffolk during the early 2020s suggests residency there at that time. It is recorded across the county. Migratory individuals usually arrive in late summer and autumn.

Life Style: A double brooded species flying by day and night and comes to light. May and June captures are first generation with larvae feeding during summer to emerge during July and August. The numbers are then boosted by immigrant individuals. Larvae from these pupate to overwinter and produce adults the following year. The larvae feed from a slight web. A very wide range of foodplants are quoted in Europe More Info but Artemisia vulgaris is generally quoted as the foodplant in Britain.

Identification: The cream or white spots along the termen are diagnostic. The third one from the apex is the largest. They decrease in size towards the tornus. There are three dots on the costa representing a sub terminal line and a large pale mark between the orbicular and reniform stigmata. Otherwise the forewing colour varies greatly from light grey through shades of brown to almost black.
