Udea ferrugalis

(Hübner, 1796)1395 / 63.031

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Of distinctly uncommon occurrence, especially in the west. Hardly rare at Ipswich, at light in September 1894-5, &c. (Mly); Finbrough (C); Aldeburgh in July 1892 (Ctw) ; Southwold salterns (Mly); Kessingland (Crf); at light at Bungay in September 1900 (Mn). Lakenheath (Fenland). [Biot near Antibes, S. France, April 1931 (Mly).]

Recent Status: Common as an immigrant to the east coast and will wander inland hence found across the county. Is thought incapable of surviving the British winter but may breed here during the summer.

Life Style: Two or more broods and night flying, coming to light. The larvae feed on a very wide range of herbaceous plants. They pupate in a case made from pieces of foodplant leaves. Pupae overwinter.

Identification: An easily recognised species from the size, shape at rest and the ferruginous brown forewing. The markings vary in intensity as does the overall colour. The hindwings are grey.
