Udea lutealis

(Hübner, 1809)1388 / 63.033

Morley’s Final Catalogue: quite common everywhere in July all over the County; at light at Monks Soham.

Recent Status: Much less common now than in Morley’s time. Udea lutealis is possibly a declining species in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies during July and August and comes to light. The larvae feed on a wide range of herbaceous and shubby plants. The larvae overwinter.

Identification: A pale cream or yellowish ochre moth with darker markings. The moth shows the triangular narrow winged Udea shape at rest being narrower winged than similar Anania or Evergestis species. It also has the Udea apical streak. The post median line takes a deep sinuation basally below the reniform stigma ending up beyond it before returning to the position the line would have followed. Both stigmata are pale and have a large dark marked outline.

Recorded in 48 (83%) of 58 10k Squares.
