Sitochroa palealis

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)1370 / 63.014

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Quite infrequent. Bentley Woods in August 1899 (Mly); Felixstow (Ml), two specimens there in 1901 (Gibbs); one at Lowestoft in August (Ent. 1922, 258). Bury, Thetford and Brandon (Wrt); several at Bamham (Mr) and at Monks Soham light (Mly) in July 1935.

Recent Status: A widely recorded but scarce local species, more frequent in the east.

Life Style: A single brooded species with a short summer flight period. The moth flies at night and comes to light. The larvae feed during summer and autumn from silken galleries, on the flowers and seeds on Daucus carota. This will include garden varieties that are left to seed. They overwinter in a cocoon below ground level where they pupate in spring.

Identification: An unmistakeable very pale yellow to white moth with the forewing veins variably clouded with black scales particularly centrally.
