Pyrausta despicata

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Very frequent on rough, dry grassy places by day everywhere, especially the Breck; Monks Soham rarely at light.

Recent Status: Recorded across the county but especially frequent on lighter land areas in the east and Breckland.

Life Style: A multi-brooded species flying by day and night and coming to light. The larvae feed on species of Plantago. They feed from silken galleries in the centre of the rosettes on young leaves, stems and rootstock causing the plants to wilt. They pupate in a cocoon at or below ground level.

Identification: A highly variable species. Some may show no clear markings others may be well marked, however none have the discrete markings of our red and gold Pyrausta species. Colours vary from cream to black.
