Elophila nymphaeata

(Linnaeus, 1758)1345 / 63.114
=Nymphula nymphaeata

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Slightly less frequent than the last species from Ipswich marshes to Fritton Lake, where it is taken at both dusk and sugar; females frequent at Monks Soham light from surrounding moat-weeds.

Recent Status: A fairly common and widely distributed species across the county.

Life Style: The moth appears to be double brooded from the Suffolk temporal distribution. They fly at night and come to light. The species has an interesting life cycle. The larvae feed on water plants. They initially mine a leaf. They then construct a case from leaf fragments and feed from that either on the surface or underwater. Windowing of water plant leaves may indicate the presence of the larvae. They hibernate in a gelatinous hibernaculum. Pupation occurs in a cocoon just below the water surface.

Identification: Elophila nyphaeata is a pretty moth that is sexually dimorphic. The female is larger and paler than the male. Both fore and hind wings are marked with brown ringed large white blotches. The termen of both wings has a narrow white or sandy brown line from the apex to the dorsum which on the forewing is preceded by discrete white blotches. This contrasts with Nyphula nitidulata in which it is preceded by a wide unbroken white band. The wings may be shaded with brown to a lesser or greater degree that can obscure much of the patterning.
