Eudonia angustea

(Curtis, 1827)1342 / 63.069

Morley’s Final Catalogue: A frequent species with us, at least in the north-east. Hemley in 1906 (Wir); Monks Soham garden in September 1931, Southwold in August 1900, Lowestoft and Oulton Broad on tree-trunks in 1898, Fritton in 1932 and on Gorleston palings (Mly).

Recent Status: Found across the county but more frequent in the east.

Life Style: It is not clear how many generations this species may have in a year. It is possibly only one with the adult moth hibernating but more likely two, although continuous multi-brooded is also suggested. Larvae are not found over the winter but the adult moths have been found in every month. They fly at night and come to light. The larvae spin silk tubes through moss species they feed on. The mosses are usually on sandy ground or above ground.

Identification: The Scopariinae (Scoparia and Eudonia) can be difficult to identify. Some species are easier than others. Before considering wing markings it is important to note the size, the shape when at rest and the forewing shape. All forewing markings can be important but of particular importance are the white sub-terminal markings, the post median line and the stigmata. They possess orbicular, claviform and reniform stigmata. Worn individuals might not be identified except by genitalia dissection.
Eudonia angustea is one of the most easily identified scopariids from its narrow shape at rest. The narrow forewings have an acute apex. They are usually strongly marked, particularly the pre median line and stigmata. There is a black basal line. The claviform stigma is usually in contact with the pre median line and the orbicular is remote. The reniform stigma has a light brown fill on the costal side and white on the dorsal side. The post median line is strongly sinuate level with the stigma and then curves beneath it. The sub-terminal line is wide, white and parallel to the termen which is black spotted.
