Agriphila geniculea

(Haworth, 1811)1309 / 63.095

Morley’s Final Catalogue: By no means infrequent; recently observed at such diverse localities as Ipswich (Pvett), at electric light in August (Mly); Flixton near Bungay (Ctw) and Fritton. Tuddenham (Sparke, Doughty) and Brandon (Barrett).

Recent Status: A generally common species across the county preferring lighter land areas. It can be abundant on the coast.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying late in the summer and coming to light. The peak occurs at the end of August to early September. The larvae feed on grasses from silken galleries low on the plants.

Identification: Agriphila geniculea is characterised by two pale acutely angled lines across the forewing. They are edged darker basally and particularly with the more basal line, this dark edging can form a prominent dash on the dorsal side of the angle. This could lead to confusion with A. inquinatella however that species has the sub-terminal line curved not acutely angled. The lines in A. inquinatella are less clearly defined and the cilia are grey. The cilia of A. geniculea are metallic.
