Agriphila tristella

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)1305 / 63.089

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Abundant throughout both the County and all Britain. Bentley Wood to Gorleston.

Recent Status: A common and often abundant Grass Moth across the county.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying during summer peaking during late August. The moth flies at night and comes to light. The larvae feed from silken tubes attached to the stems of the various grasses on which they feed.

Identification: Agriphila tristella is a variable species with a forewing colour from cream to orange/brown with the costal half of the wing usually darker. There is dark brown shading either close to the central streak only but can extend to the entire wing. The central streak varies from white to almost the same colour of the forewing. It narrows slightly for a short length before dividing along the veins to come close to reaching the termen. The narrowing of the central streak is the primary difference from A. selasella.
