Calamotropha paludella

(Hübner, 1824)1292 / 63.079

Morley’s Final Catalogue: This central European species, of obviously generic distinction from the following ones, occurs rarely among the British marshes of Devon and East Anglia alone, though feeding on the ubiquitous Typha latifolia. With us it has been detected only in the north: in the extreme west at Lakenheath (Fenland), and in the east a single male flew to the light of a brilliant lamp close beside Fritton Lake on 7 August 1934 (Mly).

Recent Status: Much commoner than in Morleys time. Recorded across the county.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies during summer and comes to light. The larvae feed on Typha latifolia. They initially mine down a leaf and hibernate in the mine. They later feed inside a stem or leaf.

Identification: An easily recognised species. The moth shows a wide triangular shape at rest. It sometimes splays its palps when resting. The forewings vary from white to sandy brown and are suffused darker with this sometimes forming diffuse spots. The hindwings are white.

Recorded in 46 (79%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1934.
Last Recorded in 2024.
