Morley’s Final Catalogue: Observed commonly sitting by day on Heracleum flowers in June, July and September. Quite frequent about Ipswich at Kersey, Bentley Woods, Wherstead, Bramford where it once occurred in profusion on Conium maculatum, and Foxhall (Mly); Hemley (EMM. 1904, 80); Kenton and Monks Soham paddock on umbel-flowers, Wetheringset, Dennington; Blaxhall (Hkr); Walberswick and Southwold (Ctw). Unnoted in north or west.

Recent Status: Not so common as in Morley’s time, possibly overlooked as it is mainly a day-flyer. Comes to SAL pheromone lure.

Life Style: A single brooded day flying species that can be found on and around the foodplant from May to August. The larvae feed on the seeds of Heracleum, spinning seeds together. They hibernate in a cocoon on the ground where they pupate.

Identification: An unmistakeable species of a dark fuscous wing with large yellow orange blotches. One on the dorsum and one centrally in the wing, thus showing three large blotches on the moth when it is seen from above. More Info
