(Clerck, 1759)1251 / 49.354

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Blythburgh and Bentley woods and Nacton on broom sparingly in May 1932; Aying by day in the utmost profusion over Lathyrus macrorrhizus by the Lark at Barton Mills in mid-May 1934; also at Letheringham and the Devils Dyke by Newmarket in 1930 (Mly); at Ampton and Timworth in 1909 (Nurse, Ent. 1911, 221).

Recent Status: An uncommon species in Suffolk currently.

Life Style: A single, sometimes partly double brooded species flying during April, May, June and August. It flies by day and night and comes to light. The larvae feed on seeds and leaves of Lathyrus linifolius and Vicia sepium. They hibernate fully fed in a cocoon on the ground where they pupate.

Identification: The forewing is a dark fuscous at the base on the dorsum becoming bright brown at the apex. There is a pair of white dorsal striae strongly curved towards the ocellus. There are costal strigulae from near the base, that are oblique, becoming less so and white towards the apex. These subtend metallic stria. The metallic stria extend to edge the ocellus that has black dashes. More Info
