Pseudococcyx turionella

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Two bred and one netted, new to Suffolk, at Ampton in 1910 (Nurse, Entom. 1911, p. 221).

Recent Status: Scarce in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying during May and June. The larvae feed in terminal buds and shoots on the higher parts of Pinus species, primarily P. sylvestris but also P. contorta and P. nigra laricio. The larvae hibernate and pupate in the larval habitation.

Identification: A large species with dark brown forewings blotched and striated grey brown. There is a sub-quadrate darker blotch on the costa at two thirds followed by vague costal strigulae. The terminal third is suffused orange that variably extends further down the wing. The palps, head and thorax are light orange. The thorax is mixed brown. The male has white hindwings with a brown shaded apex and dorsum. The female has darker hindwings.
