Donacaula mucronella

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)1330 / 63.122
=Donacaula mucronellus

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Certainly uncommon; usually taken singly: Ipswich (Ml), one at dusk and one at light in 1895 (Pyett); Hemley in 1908 (Wir); Southwold (Ctw); Beccles (Crf). Two taken at Barnham in 1911 (Nurse).

Recent Status: A scarce species in Suffolk and also an occasional immigrant.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying during summer and coming to light. The larvae feed inside the stems of the foodplant usually low down and close to the root stock..

Identification: Donacaula mucronella has a sharply demarcated pale costal streak that comes to a point at the apex. This character should separate it from any confusion species. The remainder of the forewing becomes pale towards the costa. There are no other markings on the forewing. The male is a dark brown and cream colour whilst the female is an orangey brown with a paler costal streak of the same shade. The female has an acute apex and convex costa.
