(Linnaeus, 1758) 381 / 52.007

Morley's Final Catalogue: One specimen was given to me by Mr. Garrod of Ipswich, taken in a wood near that town in 1856 (Bree, Nat. vii, 273). Bentley before 1890 (Harwood). Four examples in Bentley woods on 14 May 1894 (Baylis) and two there the next day flying round stumps of Birch whence their pupae were protruding, the undergrowth having been cleared a year or so earlier: none seen there later.

Recent Suffolk status: Very local, mainly in the Sandlings and the Breck.

Does come sparingly to pheromone. Females can be seen flying round Birch stumps on warm sunny days.

Life history: Single-brooded, flying in late spring/early summer.

Identification: Similar to Red-belted clearwing but larger, with reddish scales at the base of the forewing and reddish palps.

Habitats: Heathland, open Birch woodland.
