Morley's Final Catalogue: Not known from the County in Morley's time. The first British record was in 1926.
Recent Suffolk status: The first county record was to the SAL lure late afternoon on 14/07/2024 in the south-west of the county (P. Bryant). This was quickly followed by the second sighting, again to the SAL lure on the 19/07/2024 in the same part of the county (M. Ferris).
Increasingly recorded in the UK in recent times with the more widespread use of pheromone lures to attract clearwings. Highly likely there will be more Suffolk records as the species continues to spread.
Life history: Has a 2 year life cycle, flying as an adult only in even-numbered years. Larva makes pear-shaped galls in the twigs of Sallows.
Identification: A small species similar to Currant clearwing, but that species has a yellow collar and 2 yellow lines on the thorax, both of which are lacking on Sallow clearwing. Yellow-legged clearwing has yellow legs and more bands on the abdomen.
Habitats: River valleys, wetland areas with Sallows.
