Tyta luctuosa

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 2465 / 73.031

Morley's Final Catalogue: A southern insect, extending only to Norfolk, and with us totally confined to the Breck District, where it is sufficiently frequent and shows no sign of diminution. Brandon (barrett), sometimes plentiful by day (20 June 1914 Morley) and a few at light in July (Vivian). Downham (Norgate); Bury (Wrt); Tuddenham (Bloomfield), Worlington, Icklingham, &c. (Trans. ii, p.clxxxiv) in August 1934-5.

Recent Suffolk Status: Extinct in the Brecks. The very few recent records have been from the very south-western parts of the county where it just might be possible the moth is attempting to recolonize from known populations close by in Cambridgeshire. The was also a record on the coast in 2020 at Bawdsey (M. Deans) that was thought to be a migrant.

Life history: Single-brooded. Most recent records have been of adults at light traps. The moth is more typically noted on sunny days flying over the grassy habitat and visiting flowers.

Identification: Unmistakeable.

Habitat: Sparsely vegetated grassy areas, road verges, field margins. Formerly Breckland grassland.
