Morley's Final Catalogue: Broadly distributed, but usually singly and never frequent. Bentley, very rare at Ipswich (Mly) and at Waldringfield (Wlr), Aldeburgh, Leiston; Needham. Tuddenham and Barton Mills (Sparke), Mildenhall. Flying at Eupatorium flower in Thorndon Fen in 1926 (Mly); not uncommon at French marigolds in Bungay (Mn); Beccles (Mr), Fritton on sugar (Trans. ii, 88), Belton (Wiltshire), Gorleston (D).

Recent Suffolk Status: Local, mainly on the coast but also inland along river valleys and at fenland sites. The commonest of the two Gold spots recorded in the county.

Life history: Double-brooded. Seen at light in small numbers in the correct habitats.

Identification: The very similar Lempke's Gold spot is very rare in the county and most records are from Redgrave Fen along the Waveney valley. Lempke's Gold spot is smaller, more lighter orange brown in colour and the elongated silver mark at the tip of the forewing ends bluntly, not in a point like Gold spot.
Both species vary quite a lot and dissection may be necessary in some cases to separate the two.

Habitat: River valleys, fens, reedbeds.
