Morley's Final Catalogue: Locally abundant in marshes. Brantham in August 1889 (Bucknell); a few at light in Ipswich during 1895 (Pyett); in some plenty at Hemley in 1901 (Wlr); Southwold (Ctwell); Lowestoft (Boyd); Fritton (Trans. ii, p. clxxxvii); Beccles (l.c., p.293; Crowfoot), Fritton (Wiltshire). Tuddenham in 1900 (Sparke); larvae common at Ampton and West Stow in 1909 (Nurse).

Recent Suffolk status: Very common along the coast. Local inland.

Life history: Single-brooded. Has been seen flying over reedbeds at dusk as well as coming to light in the county. A few larval records also noted.

Identification: Unmistakeable.

Habitat: Reedbeds, fens, marshes. Regularly wanders away from these habitats when it can turn up in gardens.
