Morley's Final Catalogue: Not noted from the UK in Morley's time. First found in Essex in 1968.

Recent Suffolk Status: Very rare wanderer. 2 county records, in 2019 and 2021, both from Landguard, Felixstowe (N. Odin). Both no doubt from populations on the Essex coast just to the south. Unlikely to colonize the county as the foodplant isn't present in the south of the county. Subject of conservation work in Essex where foodplant has been planted at new sites away from areas threatened by coastal erosion.

Life history: Single-brooded. Larve feed in the roots of Hog's fennel, creating distinctive 'frass volcanoes'. Adults are attracted to light but are more easier to find after dark on stems of the foodplant.

Identification: Frosted orange is smaller and more brightly coloured.

Habitat: Edge of saltmarshes in Essex where the foodplant, Hog's fennel, is found. Also found in coastal Kent.
