Morley's Final Catalogue: The grass, Elymus arenarius, L., was known to Hind only from Thorp to Corton. This Noctua was locally common in 1903 at Kessingland (EMM. 1904, 80), where a few had first been discovered in Suffolk flying over flowers in June 1890, with one at light and others sitting at dusk on grasses at Lowestoft denes (Ctw). Gorleston in July 1929 (Mr); and Hopton in both 1929 and 1932 (Trans. ii, 87).

Recent Suffolk status: Very local along the coast, mainly between Aldeburgh and Lowestoft. Also found at Landguard, Felixstowe.

Life history: Single-brooded.

Identification: Obscure wainscot has a broader and more pointed forewing.

Habitat: Coastal sand dunes.
