The Saxon
Hyppa rectilinea

(Esper, 1796) 2320 / 73.110

Morley's Final Catalogue: H. rectilinea has been taken in Suffolk by Capt. Stanley Smith (Burton, in lit. 21 April 1936): I was very surprised to see one sitting on a Scots pine-trunk when Pine Hawks were being sought on 26 June 1932 near Gobblecock Hall on Sutton Heath (Smith, in lit. 28 April 1936; teste Dr Cockayne).

Recent Suffolk Status: Unknown. The Saxon is a northern species in the UK found mainly in Scotland and is not known to be migratory. The single historic Suffolk record is completely unexpected.

Life history: Single-brooded. Comes to light and can also be regularly found at rest on rocks, trees and fence posts by day - just like the only county record was recorded.

Identification: Fairly unmistakeable but bears a slight resemblance to Light brocade.

Habitat: Scrub beside rivers and streams on moorland and open woodland.
