(Linnaeus, 1767) 2317 / 73.214

Morley's Final Catalogue: Distinctly scarce, and known from only Bentley, Brandeston, Needham, Stowmarket, Bury, Ickworth; and Beccles. Henham in August 1924 (Mr).

Recent Suffolk Status: Suffered a massive decline nationally in the 1970s following the outbreak of Dutch Elm disease. Last record in the county at that time was in 1968. Thought to be extinct. Unexpectedly reappeared in 2021 in the west of the county, with more records in 2022 and 2023 suggesting the species may be attempting to recolonise the county from Cambridgeshire where it has been increasing.

Life history: Single-brooded. Larvae feed on epicormic growth on Elm trees. Recent larval searches in Suffolk have been negative so far.

Identification: The large white patches along the costa should separate this species from the other pinions.

Habitat: Hedgerows with Elms, woodland.

Verification Grade Comment: Very rare.
