Common Wainscot
Mythimna pallens

(Linnaeus, 1758) 2199 / 73.291

Morley's Final Catalogue: In profusion at Sudbury in 1836 (Ent. Mag. iv, p.233); and still all over Suffolk from Bentley to Gorleston.

Recent Suffolk Status: Very common. Prone to big fluctuations in numbers, very common one year then scarcer the next.

Note that DNA bar-coding has shown that Mathew's Wainscot is a coastal form/race of Common Wainscot (Mythimna pallens) occurring in saltmarsh habitats from southern Suffolk to East Kent and from West Sussex to western Hampshire so is no longer a separate species and should be just recorded as Common wainscot.

Life history: Double-brooded. The second brood is larger. Regularly noted well into October in the county. Can come to light traps in big numbers.

Identification: Common wainscot can be separated from both Southern and Smoky wainscot by the lack of patches of dark scales on the forewing and the white hindwings.

Habitat: Various grassy habitats.

Recorded in 56 (97%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1836.
Last Recorded in 2023.
