Morley's Final Catalogue: Doubtless abundant throughout the county, as it certainly is at Ipswich, Monks Soham, Beccles and Gorleston.

Recent Suffolk Status: Very common.

Life history: Single-brooded. Has been seen from May to October in Suffolk.
Can come to light in large numbers.

Identification: Smoky wainscot is most similar to Southern wainscot. The best feature to separate the two is the very obvious crest of scales across the front of the thorax on Southern wainscot, which is lacking on Smoky. Southern wainscot also has a slightly more pointed forewing. Common wainscot lacks the patches of darker scales and has a white hindwing.

Habitat: Various grassy habitats including gardens.

Recorded in 55 (95%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1940.
Last Recorded in 2024.
