Morley's Final Catalogue: Suffolk, teste W. C. Hewitson Esq. (Stephens, Illust. ii, 1829, p.133); Monks Soham. If this and the two former species be not actually mere forms of but one, it is most remarkable with what similarity and interassociation they all three occur in Suffolk.

Recent Suffolk Status: Common.

Life history: Single-brooded. Larvae have been found in the county feeding at night in spring on various low growing plants including Nettles along woodland rides.

Identification: Square-spotted clay is a darker moth with a broad dark band in the the outer part of the forewing. Triple-spotted clay, a scarce species in Suffolk, has a narrower forewing and the hindwings are pale in colour, not grey as in Double-square spot.

Habitat: Woodland, scrub, hedgerows, gardens.

Recorded in 55 (95%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1940.
Last Recorded in 2024.
