Morley's Final Catalogue: Certainly much rarer than half-century ago; never seen by me in Suffolk (Mly). Recorded before 1890 as ''not common: Bures, Belstead, Ipswich, Aldeburgh, Leiston; Needham, Bury, Beccles, Lowestoft''. Later it has been found, only singly, at Copdock on 14 August 1894 (Hkg); Ipswich one in 1893 (Pyett); Hemley, on sugared tansy in 1901 (Wlr); Waldringfield in 1891 (James); Gorleston (Wiltshire), one (D) and one in August 1920 (Mr).
Recent Suffolk Status: Fairly common and widespread.
Life history: Single-brooded.
Identification: Lesser yellow underwing is larger and has a crescent mark on the hindwing.
Habitat: Hedgerows, grasslands, gardens.
