Morley's Final Catalogue: Africa, Asia, Europe and Suffolk are blessed by multitudes of this handsome and very variable species, always welcome despite its ubiquity.

Recent Suffolk Status: Abundant. Suffolk's commonest macro moth.

Life history: Single-brooded. Seen from May through till November in Suffolk. Aestivates during the summer months. Easily disturbed from daytime resting places when the yellow hindwings are very obvious. Very common at light. Arrives as an immigrant species on the coast, sometimes in huge numbers. Commonly seen at sugar and on flowers including Ivy blossom at night. Larve are commonly found throughout the winter months, feeding on various low growing plants and grasses and are frequently dug up in gardens as they rest in the soil during the day.

Identification: Lunar yellow underwing also has the small black mark in the corner of the forewing but is a much smaller species.

Habitat: All habitats.
