(Hübner, 1808) 2045 / 72.047

Morley's Final Catalogue: Is confined to west coast from Sussex to I. Man.

[Not recorded in Suffolk during Morley's time]

Recent Suffolk Status: The first county records came from Orfordness on 3, 15 & 19.07.2003 with further records at this site up to at least 2014 (M. Marsh).
A suspected immigrant to the county, although increasing records in more recent years including at inland locations may mean it has begun colonisation.

Life history: Single-brooded in one long generation from summer through to early autumn.

Identification: Forewings paler and greyer than similar species. Hindwings are much cleaner white. A weakly marked pale yellow costa also assist what can be quite a tricky identification. Legs are somewhat longer than Scarce footman. A clear photo showing the white hindwings will be required for acceptance of any record. Worn specimens may need dissection to confirm.

Habitat: Formerly cliffs and beaches in the south and west of Britain, the moth has colonised many new habitats including woodland and gardens.

Verification Grade Comment: A clear photo showing the white hindwings will be required for acceptance of any record.

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Recorded in 29 (50%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 2003.
Last Recorded in 2024.
