Morley's Final Catalogue: Ubiquitous, but not very often seen; flies wildly before thunder. Recently noted at Barton Mills, Blythburgh Wood, Monks Soham, Gorleston.

Recent Suffolk status: Abundant. Males often seen in the daytime flying wildly in search of the flightless females. Regular records of the very colourful and highly distinctive larvae and egg batches on the empty female cocoons.

Life history: Single-brooded in one long extended generation throughout the summer and autumn. Larvae found throughout the spring, summer and autumn. Egg batches often noted in the autumn and winter months.

Identification: The Scarce vapourer is larger, darker and has white and orange markings near the wing tip.

Habitat: Found in a wide variety of habitats including gardens and woodland.
