Bordered White
Bupalus piniaria

(Linnaeus, 1758) 1954 / 70.276

Morley's Final Catalogue: Flies around pine-trees by day, but is merely locally abundant with us. Both larvae and imagines in profusion at Bentley, before the fir-wood was destroyed by fire from railway in 1911, and now recovering there; bred at Playford (Gr, Ent. Wk. Intell. ii, 1857, 11). Brightwell woods (Wlr). Abundant at Scots Hall in Westleton in June 1921 (Vinter). Herringfleet and Gorleston (Mr). West Suffolk distribution unnoted.

Recent Suffolk Status: Common, mainly in the Sandlings and Breck with scattered records elsewhere.

Life history: Single-brooded. Adults can be seen flying high around the tops of pine trees during the day as well as coming to light. Larvae occasionally found in the county underneath Pine trees when preparing to pupate.

Identification: Unmistakeable, although when seen flying high around pines could be mistaken for a butterfly species.

Habitat: Heathland, coniferous woodland, plantations, gardens.
