Engrailed
Ectropis crepuscularia

(Goeze, 1781) 1947 / 70.270
=Ectropis bistortata

Morley's Final Catalogue: Our most local species; almost unnoticed for thirty years. Apparently confined, for some occult reason, to the Breck: Mildenhall (Wrt) in 1934 (Btn) and 1936 (Gd); Brandon, very plentiful on fir and larch trunks in May, and Tuddenham (Vivian); on fir trunks at Tuddenham in 1900 (Sparke).

Recent Suffolk Status: Common. Note that recent DNA research has found that Engrailed Ectropis bistortata and Small engrailed Ectropis crepuscularia are in fact that same species and all moths should now be recorded as Ectropis crepuscularia .

Life history: Triple-brooded. Larvae have been found in Suffolk in late spring/ early summer on various trees.

Identification: Brindled white-spot has a darker ground colour and has the white spot on the wing.

Habitat: Woodland, parkland, scrub, gardens.

Recorded in 55 (95%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1940.
Last Recorded in 2023.
