Morley's Final Catalogue: Very far from common, perhaps overlooked through its November debut. Since 1890, noted only sparingly at Ipswich lights in 1894 and on oak trunks at Bentley Woods in 1895 (Morley).

Recent Suffolk Status: Local.

Life history: Single-brooded. Both sexes can be found on tree trunks after dark. Larvae recorded fairly regularly in the county in late spring/early summer on a wide variety of trees.

Identification: Mottled umber never has the golden ground colour of Scarce umber. The flightless female Mottled umber is white with black markings whilst the Scarce umber female is brown. Dotted border has the row of black dots along the edge of the forewing and normally flies early in the year.

Habitat: Woodland, scrub, gardens.
