Morley's Final Catalogue: Scarce, but widespread. Sudbury (Ransom), Freston, Ipswich, Brandeston, Swefling, Aldeburgh, Lowestoft in August (Ent. 1922, 258), Fritton, Beccles, Flixton, Bungay at light; Needham, West Stow; Tuddenham Fen in August 1928 (Mly), Brandon.

Recent Suffolk Status: Formerly a local species but now quite rare in the county with very few recent records. Photos may be requested to confirm records.

Life history: Single-brooded.

Identification: August thorn rests with wings held flatter. Canary-shouldered thorn normally has the bright yellow thorax, but beware specimens with a buff thorax which can resemble September thorn. The outer cross line is straighter in September thorn.

Habitat: Woodland, parkland, gardens.
