Sharp-angled Peacock
Macaria alternata

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 1890 / 70.212

Morley's Final Catalogue: Is believed to occur nowhere in eastern England, so excluded from our County by Bloomfield (1890, p.55), presumably correctly.

Recent Suffolk Status: Fairly common in east Suffolk, more local in the west. Has become more common in recent times.

Life history: Double-brooded.

Identification: Very similar to Peacock. Sharp-angled peacock normally has a darker grey band running through the paw print mark on the forewing and down across the hindwing. Other features more obscure - paw mark is larger on Peacock and edge of concave section of forewing is thinner and lighter brown.

Habitat: Woodland, scrub, river valleys.

Recorded in 37 (64%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1933.
Last Recorded in 2024.
