(Linnaeus, 1758) 1889 / 70.211

Morley's Final Catalogue: Much less 'rare' than was thought in 1890 and one would expect at the north-east extremity of its English range. Bentley before 1890 (Ml) Woods, always plentiful in early June 1893-1903 (Mly, Pyett, Bylis, Platten, Hkg), 1932-3 (Bp.) and in 1934 (Trans. ii, p. clxxvi); Playford (Gr); Beccles (Crf); Tuddenham.

Recent Suffolk Status: Locally common mainly in the Sandlings and Brecks with scattered records elsewhere.

Life history: Double-brooded.

Identification: Very similar to Sharp-angled peacock. Sharp-angled peacock normally has a darker grey band running through the paw print mark on the forewing and down across the hindwing. Other features more obscure - paw mark is smaller on Sharp-angled and edge of concave section of forewing is darker brown.

Habitat: Woodland, heathland, forestry areas with Birch.

Recorded in 42 (72%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1893.
Last Recorded in 2024.
