Morley's Final Catalogue: Previously confused here with the last species. Not uncommon at Copdock in 1897 (Hkg); frequent at Needham Market in winter of 1929-30 (Platten); occasionally at Monks Soham light during 1904-33 (Mly).

Recent Suffolk Status: Very local. Much scarcer than the widespread Winter moth.

Life history: Single-brooded. Adults can be located on tree trunks after dark. Larvae are occasionally noted, mainly on Birch species.

Identification: Winter moth is smaller, darker, rougher scaled and the hindwings barely show beneath the forewings. Female moths have larger wing stumps with a strong dark band.

Habitat: Mainly wooded heathland sites.
