(Linnaeus, 1758) 163 / 54.002

Morley's Final Catalogue: 'Common' just beyond Yarmouth in 1834 (Paget), but annually being driven to smaller areas by agriculture. 'Swarming' on our west border at Isleham in 1841. No later observations come from the west, and it seems restricted now to the north-east corner of our county: Oulton broad on flowers in 1898 (Bedwell); Barnby Broad; and several Bradwell marsh during June 1933.

Recent Suffolk status: Local, mainly in the Breck. Not recorded from VC25 for many years, but found at Aldeburgh in 2018 (but not seen at that site again yet) and possibly re-found in the north-east of the county at Outney common in 2021.

Life history: Single-brooded, flying in summer.

Identification: The only Forester species known to occur in the county so unmistakeable.

Habitats: Flowery grasslands, Breckland, woodland rides.

Recorded in 11 (19%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1898.
Last Recorded in 2024.
