(Linnaeus, 1767) 2455 / 72.081

Morley's Final Catalogue: An historic species with us. Taken very rarely about 1870 at both Bentley and Holbrook by Garrett and Tim Last; but not recorded later, and now most likely extinct, though the latter locality is well wooded and recently quite unworked.

Recent Suffolk status: Failed to appear in the county during the twentieth century.

A number of records have been amassed since 2000, with the first at Dunwich Heath on 14.08.2007 (C. Moore).

Further records followed at Landguard on 02.08.2011, 13.08.2015 and 23.07.2017 (N. Odin). One was trapped at Bawdsey Hall on 19.07.2017 (M.J. Deans).

An influx in 2018 resulted in four singletons trapped along the coast in the same week; at Bawdsey Hall (M.J. Deans) and Kessingland (A. Eaton) on the night of 02.07.2018; at Landguard on 03.07.2018 (N. Odin) and again at Bawdsey Hall on 04.07.2018 (M.J. Deans). A later record followed on 15.07.2018 when one was found at rest on a building on Orfordness (M. Marsh). A further record followed at Bawdsey Hall on 08.08.2018 (M.J. Deans) with a late example at Hollesley on 14.09.2018 (R. Watson). Recorded much more widely in the last few years, with multiples at some sites.

Whilst some of these records almost certainly relate to immigrants, there has to be a chance that this moth has recolonised some of its former haunts.

Life history: Single-brooded in one long extended generation.

Identification: Compare with Light Crimson Underwing, which has a less wavy dark band on the hindwing.

Habitat: Woodland, parks.

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Recorded in 17 (29%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 2007.
Last Recorded in 2024.
