Morley's Final Catalogue: Ipswich, Needham, Leiston and Beccles: ante 1890. Now common, at least locally, at Bentley and Copdock (Hkg); Wladringfield (Wlr); at light in Ipswich (Mly, Platten) and Bungay (Mn); Beccles, Fritton, Burgh Castle and Gorleston (D, Mr). Abundant at Ivy round Southwold in Sept 1935.

Recent Suffolk Status: Common.

Life history: Single-brooded. Regularly recorded on Ivy blossom and Blackberries as well as at light. Can come to light in large numbers.
Larvae have been found in winter and early spring at night feeding on acid grasses on heathland and along forestry rides.

Identification: A very variable species in colour.
Beaded chestnut has a narrower kidney mark and a greyish hindwing, unlike the white hindwing of Lunar underwing.

Habitat: A wide range of grassland habitats including gardens.

Recorded in 50 (86%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1935.
Last Recorded in 2024.
