Beaded Chestnut
Agrochola lychnidis

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 2267 / 73.186

Morley's Final Catalogue: Referring also to Brown-spot pinion: In profusion on sugar and ivy-blossom everywhere from Bentley to Burgh Castle. The latter at Wingfield, and abroad till 5 November 1932 at Monks Soham; Mildenhall in 1936.

Recent Suffolk Status: Common.

Life history: Single-brooded. Can be seen at light in large numbers at some sites. Occasionally recorded at Ivy blossom.

Identification: It is very variable in appearance with several named forms; care should be taken as some forms superficially resemble forms of Lunar Underwing (Omphaloscelis lunosa) however the slimmer oval and kidney marks should help identification. The similar Brown-spot pinion has black marks along the costa - these are brown in Beaded chestnut.

Habitat: Woodlands, scrub, hedgerows, heathland and gardens.

Recorded in 53 (91%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1932.
Last Recorded in 2024.
